Book Review: "Break Free" by Don Soriano | 8 Principles to Get from Employee to Employer in 3 Years or Less (www.TheGracefulMist.com) |
This is an encouraging book which discusses topics that are timely most especially for those who are still starting to earn their money, students, employees, people who are trying to start a business and those who are financially frustrated. It`s a small book with big seeds ready to plant simple and practical financial wisdom to those who seek financial guidance. Don Soriano is an inspirational speaker, best-selling author, personal finance coach, entrepreneur and sales coach.
Mr. Don Soriano gets straight to the point with the 8 principles most especially with the first one which tells readers not to quit their jobs. Through this book, he teaches people how to financially break free with the 8 principles along with his story of how he went from being bankrupt with Php 500,000 debt to being financially-free after 3 years. Along with his personal narrations, he gives tips on why, where, when and how to start to break free from financial struggles. He also gives references as to where readers can learn more about a specific financial topic. Throughout the book, there are many relatable and relevant quotes from successful and notable people with different backgrounds like John Maxwell, Joel Osteen, Socrates, Aristotle and John D. Rockefeller that will surely motivate readers as they continue to read.
It can be read in an hour. However, if you tend to read slow because you`re trying to absorb all the knowledge you`re realizing as you read the book, it might take more than just an hour. I finished reading the book in a little bit more than an hour. I timed myself and it took me 1 hour and 8 minutes. Even if it took only around an hour to read this book, I was really able to understand and learn a lot from Mr. Don Soriano`s personal experiences, mistakes, tips and guidance. Reading this book even made me realize that I can do and learn so much in an hour. After reading this book for only about an hour, it`s best to go over it again, scan pages and fully ponder on how to act upon the important tips he shared. While reading, I put asterisks (*) on the sentences I want to fully remember and go back again. You may use a pen or highlighter to put a mark on the parts you want to remember and apply in your own lives.
The book is personally relatable to me because Mr. Don Soriano is an Accountancy graduate. I`m currently studying Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and was almost losing the motivation and willpower to go on with this educational course. However, his book just gave me the motivational boost I need to keep holding on because it`ll be worth it. Also, his personal experiences with managing money, lifestyle and time are honest and relatable which will hopefully give other readers a lesson and realization they can definitely learn from. This book was written in a way that will make the readers feel as if they`re being taught, mentored or coached personally. A lot of his principles are true and agreeable and the Money Jars System he shared is a great idea for money management. According to the author, he also follows influential people like Bo Sanchez, Francis Kong and Chinkee Tan which are people I also follow up to this day. I`ve heard and learned from Mr. Chinkee Tan for three consecutive Sundays with a full packed audience before. I still learn from these people through their Facebook pages and blogs.
5 Important Lessons I Learned from "Break Free" by Don Soriano:
Book Review: "Break Free" by Don Soriano | 8 Principles to Get from Employee to Employer in 3 Years or Less (www.TheGracefulMist.com) |
1.) Having a lot of free time doesn`t always mean you can have a more productive time in starting your business.
“When I quit my job to make a new path for myself, I started waking up a little bit later. It wasn`t harmful at first. But a few weeks into it, I was waking up at lunch wasting precious time that could have been otherwise used productively.” – Don Soriano, “Break Free”, page 9
According to Mr. Don Soriano, when he quit his job, he ended up wasting precious time that could`ve been used in a productive way. I also agree to this. If we are not yet capable of controlling and directing ourselves into doing what must be done, being our own boss might make us do things we won`t be fond of. We need to fully develop our own selves first, have the right mindset and not let idle time waste away.
“I was really happy at first because I was my own boss. Looking back, I realized I had the worst boss in the world and he was allowing me to live a mediocre life.” – Don Soriano, “Break Free”, page 9
2.) Focus on self-development and self-discipline.
“The best investment isn`t business, real estate or paper assets. Those are good investments but they shouldn`t be first on your list. The best investment is investing in yourself through continuous self-development.” – Don Soriano, “Break Free”, page 17
We need to have the right knowledge and wisdom we can use to develop and discipline ourselves so that we can move forward towards our journey to success. Before trying to conquer the world, we need to conquer ourselves. Before changing the world, we need to change ourselves.
“Success as with anything is a learnable skill. It`s something you can work on daily to achieve the life you want.” – Don Soriano, “Break Free”, page 18
3.) Conquer your fears.
“They (salespeople) understand that if they never try, the answer is always no. So they step into the fear and do it anyway. Even the best salespeople and businessmen fail and get rejected. It`s all part of life.” – Don Soriano, “Break Free” page 45
In life, there will be a lot of ups and downs. In business, there might be a lot of failures and rejections. Despite this, we must simply conquer ourselves and our fears. We need to pause over-analyzing and act upon what we`ve learned. If we never try, we`ll never know what the results are. We can also learn from the failures and rejections we`ve experienced and from those that others have encountered.
“What separates successful people from unsuccessful people is that they do the work that no one else wants to do in spite of being afraid.” – Don Soriano, “Break Free”, page 46
4.) Money management is significant.
“If you can`t manage the money you have now, you won`t get any more. If by any chance you do get your hands on extra money, you`d always find a way to spend it all.” – Don Soriano, “Break Free”, page 24
It`s very tempting to just let the money go by without a thought. However, not managing the money we`ve been blessed with and even improper management can drive us further to financial frustrations. It`s important to have a good money management system we can use so we can track, control and use our finances wisely.
“What I`m trying to say is that when you start handling your money properly, you`re not actually restricting your freedom. Rather, you`re promoting it because you`re helping yourself reach REAL FREEDOM in the future.” – Don Soriano, “Break Free, page 26
5.) Continuous learning is essential.
“Self-education is the great equalizer. It doesn`t matter who you are, where you`re from, or what your past is. If you`re willing to study to grow yourself, you can achieve greatness.” – Don Soriano, “Break Free”, page 18
Most people get demotivated all the time. We need constant learning, encouragement and assurance that we`re on the right path. The world is often changing and moving which is why it`s important to always learn from various sources like this book. We need to read books, learn from mentors and hear inspirational words for encouragement. We need to learn for the physical, financial, spiritual and emotional aspects of our lives. Learning and applying knowledge and wisdom are essential so we have the assurance that we`re living our lives to the full.
“Don`t live life in regret. It`s never too late to start growing yourself. Start today and never stop learning, It`s an amazing experience to see how quickly and how far you can grow.” – Don Soriano, “Break Free”, page 22
